Inspiration
My inspiration came from how different rockstars have been in multiple successful bands, creating a huge web of intertangled bands. I wanted to create a card game that explores this web, 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon style.
What it does
The original idea was a simple game where you collect cards of different 90's rockstars, and try to form as many real-life bands as possible. I then came up with a few game mechanics to enrich the user experience, such as making your own band and having a bandmate chemistry mechanic. Unfortunately, I had to settle on creating a webpage for proof of concept due to multiple factors (starting late, working alone, and having no web development experience).
How I built it
I used VScode with a live preview extension so I could see changes as they were made, which was a HUGE help in familiarizing myself with the languages. I heavily relied on Chatgpt to help me learn syntax and keywords. After creating the first few elements, I was able to understand enough to get the ball rolling. From there I transitioned from copying gpt's code to writing my own code and asking for help when I got stuck.
Challenges I ran into
My most obvious challenge was just the lack of experience, so I had to spend a lot of time learning the languages. After that was the fact that I worked alone. The two put together gave me my biggest challenge. If I had some teammates the workload could have easily been managed. With all this said, I have no regrets. I had a lot of fun, very little stress, and learned a lot!
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
While my webpage is far from polished, it is mostly what I set out to achieve. There was a lot of points where I got stuck and considered whether I wanted to submit my project, but I managed to persevere and create a project I can be proud of.
What I learned
First and foremost, I learned a great deal about HTML and CSS. I also learned that maybe next hackathon I should find a team (lol). I think, my biggest lesson is to not take anything to seriously and to always power through difficult times.
What's next for Grohl's Rock & Roll
The next step for my project would be to make my site more interactive and add a few more pages. After that, I would want to automate the website to populate the webpage with the users' cards and statistics. My final goal would be to add in the game mechanics for a final working project, which could be later refined.
