Inspiration

Gen-Z will annually earn $33 trillion by 2030, yet most lack financial literacy or stability, which affects their spending habits. As 4 Broke Gen Z’s, we felt like most financial apps don’t work for us. They’re either too complex and intimidating, or boring and unappealing. Based on market research, we found a solution: Figo, the gamified Gen-Z financial manager that’s actually relevant.

What it does

Figo provides an automated spendings tracker that syncs across your bank accounts using Plaid. Users set daily and monthly budgets, and Figo provides consistent feedback to raise financial accountability.

Users begin by completing a personality quiz. They are assigned a Finsona that corresponds to their spending habits. Figo encourages users to check the app consistently by giving them coins to collect

Users can chat with an AI assistant that understands the users' financial needs to provide personalized guidance.

How we built it

We used React Native and Expo as our main framework. Convex powers our backend and makes the frontend completely reactive. We also integrate through Plaid to connect users' accounts. We leveraged Convex's end-to-end type safety to iterate quickly and catch bugs.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating Plaid was a key challenge, necessitating a secure and seamless connection between user bank accounts and Figo for the spendings tracker. Implementing push notifications using Convex actions was also tricky to figure out. Lastly, smoothing out initial onboarding bugs was essential to ensure a positive first user experience and prevent drop-offs. Overcoming these challenges was pivotal to making Figo a relevant and engaging financial management tool for Gen-Z.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

In developing Figo, we're particularly proud of a few key achievements. Integrating with Plaid was a major milestone, allowing us to offer an automated spending tracker by securely connecting user bank accounts, providing essential financial insights. Overcoming challenges in financial data integration, user interface design for Gen-Z, and the initial onboarding process significantly improved Figo's functionality and user experience. We also successfully incorporated AI to deliver personalized financial advice, making the app not just functional but engaging.

What we learned

It was our first time working with React Native, and Convex made the whole process flow much more smoothly.

What's next for Figo

Figo is the MVP for our startup! We'll be launching additional testing soon.
