Inspiration
youCode is all about fostering diversity, and our team is testament enough to that. None of us are computer science students, but we gathered here to challenge ourselves and find ways to promote wellness in the process. So, our project had to reflect these values: getting (way) out of our comfort zones, and finding ways to support each other through the challenges and frustrations.
We brought that diversity to wellness by helping foster a multifaceted approach to wellness that reflects the diverse interests and needs of users, because we all "live it" differently.
What it does
GenZen is a mobile app designed to help UBC students pursue wellness in different forms while engaging with their campus environment. It does so by allowing users to filter activities taking place on campus based on wellness category (e.g. physical, environmental, arts). Now more than ever, we also realise that our wellness is interconnected, and so made sure to include categories that involve community wellness, such as advocacy and community outreach.
Once the user selects the wellness category they're interested in, they're able to view relevant events taking place on campus on a map of UBC. They can click on each event to view details such as event location, date, club, and time.
How we built it
We built a prototype of GenZen using figma, and created some interactive pages using html, css, and javascript. In the future, we would love to develop our prototype by programming more interactions.
Challenges we ran into
Since we're all beginners, we struggled with learning new programming languages and particularly understanding which ones would be most useful to us.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of our perseverance and resilience despite the hours of frustration and exhaustion (and oftentimes having to start over).
What we learned
We learned that we still have a long way to go, but that placing ourselves in this uncomfortably challenging position despite our concerns was a valuable experience. Participating in a hackathon felt unattainable in the past, but this experience helped guide us toward the skills we might need to work on to participate in future hackathons!
What's next for GenZen @UBC
Some additional features in development are recommended activities, and a cross-platform chat feature to communicate with others attending the same events/ activities.
